Glass and steel are the most carbon-intensive industries in the world, according to new research from the London School of Economics.
Industrial glass, which is used to make glass, is by far the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, according the report.
The report analysed emissions from manufacturing of glass and found that it was responsible for about a third of the world population’s carbon emissions.
It also found that glass made up only about 4 per cent of the glassmaking industry globally in 2013.
The findings have prompted the UK government to introduce a new regulation that aims to reduce the amount of glass being made.
The regulation would also aim to tackle the production of glass in low-carbon ways.
